15.08.12 - The Toronto Star interviews David Lieberman about Toronto and Chicago's sisterly bond
Associate Professor David Lieberman was quoted in a Toronto Star article yesterday on Chicago and Toronto's relationship as sister cities.
“Post-Second World War modernism really comes out of Chicago and really has an opportunity to take root in Toronto years later,” Lieberman told reporter Tim Alamenciak. “One of the greatest works of modernism in architecture is a little project called Toronto Dominion Centre, done by a Chicago-based architect (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe).”
Toronto and Chicago became sister cities in 1991, and have much in common.
Writes Alamenciak: "The two look similar from above: A dense urban core surrounded by a spider web of suburban dwellers. The official city populations are roughly equal, but when you take into account the surrounding suburbs — theirs, Chicagoland, and ours, Greater Toronto Area — Chicago’s population is 9.7 million compared with 5.5 million in the GTA."
