25.09.13 - Daniels Faculty alumni and friends celebrated at the University of Toronto's Arbor Awards

On September 10th, five alumni and friends of the Daniels Faculty were honoured at the University of Toronto's 2013 Arbor Awards, including Lorne Gertner, Peter Ortved, Janet Rosenberg, Jerry and the late Iona Silverberg, and Ted Teshima.

The Arbor Awards were created by the University of Toronto in 1989 to recognize volunteers for their outstanding personal service to the University. Since then, the University has annually acknowledged those alumni and friends whose loyalty, dedication and generosity have added immeasurably to the quality of the University of Toronto experience for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Janet Rosenberg
Janet, one of Toronto’s most renowned landscape architects, has been an ardent supporter of the Daniels Faculty. She has been active in the life of the school, serving as a member of the Campaign Cabinet. Janet encourages and supports staff in efforts to remain connected with the Faculty, through allowing time to attend reviews as critics as well as to teach courses. She has also helped sponsor the Charles Birnbaum (The Cultural Landscape Foundation) Lecture and events at the Daniels Faculty, bringing to light an important discussion about understanding and preserving our cultural landscapes.

Jerald and the late Iona Silverberg (BArch, 1961)
Mr. Jerald Silverberg has had a successful career in real estate development, and is an ardent supporter of the Daniels Faculty, participating in convocations and the processional for honorary graduand and mentor, John H. Daniels. He is active in the life of the school and its alumni, serving as a volunteer of the Campaign Cabinet; as a guest critic; and alumni host proposing the celebratory toast to the Class of 1961 MArch graduating class. He and the late Iona Silverberg were a charming addition to the school’s many FORAs and dinners and hosted the faculty at their home on several occasions.

Lorne M. Gertner (BArch, 1982)
Mr. Lorne Gertner is a founding member of the Daniels Faculty Campaign Cabinet, consulting with Dean Richard Sommer on advancement plans and strategy. Lorne has parlayed his architecture education into creating numerous companies, as a successful entrepreneur and brand strategist. He is one of the Faculty’s most committed advocates, making introductions to other alumni and business leaders; guest teaching in design studios; and serving as a mentor to graduating students.

Peter C. Ortved (BArch, 1972)
Mr. Peter Ortved and fellow principals recently celebrated the 50th year of their firm CS&P Architects in fall 2012. He took a lead volunteer fundraising role in establishing a generous endowed student award for Daniels students, named after his former mentor and teacher Professor Emeritus Peter Prangnell. Peter Ortved has participated actively in the school, assisting with the Faculty’s recent MArch accreditation visit, and offering employment to Daniels Faculty students and graduates. He is a well-respected heritage advocate, serving as the past chair on the Board of Heritage Toronto.

Ted Teshima (BArch, 1962)
Mr. Ted Teshima is a partner of the internationally respected architecture firm Moriyama & Teshima Architects. In his quiet and understated way, Ted has served the Daniels Faculty as a committed volunteer over many years. He organized his class reunion in 2009, and was effective in raising funds from other alumni to establish the George Baird Lecture, an endowed annual lecture named after former Dean and close friend Professor Emeritus George Baird.
