Instructor: Melanie Mignault
Meeting Section: L0103
Tuesday, 9:00am - 1:00pm; Friday, 2:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: TBD

Parc Jean-Drapeau is one of the Montreal’s hottest discussion topics, as the island park has undergone major transformations over recent years, initiating a collective reflection focusing on the beloved EXPO 67 site’s evolution. The studio will be structured as a think-tank for students to explore innovative design and public engagement / communication ideas. Students will be challenged to understand current park issues and to imagine its future. The studio will be structured around four design assignments, under the supervision of Mélanie Mignault. Each of NIPPAYSAGE’s founding partners will be the instructor for one assignment.

Located a mere five minute subway trip from downtown Montréal, Parc Jean Drapeau provides many recreation tourist attractions that make it a unique site in Canada. This outstanding park is enlivened by striking architecture, thematic gardens, public art, rich military heritage, museum, leisure amenities, concerts, sports events and major festivals that contribute to its unique character and diversity.

Today, the park is at somewhat of a crossroad, as it struggles to find a strong identity and a certain balance between its multiple and sometimes conflicting uses. The unifying park master plan will help define and guide the park’s priorities, as it evolves and transforms over the next 50 years. The studio objective is to elaborate a powerful vision for the park and to promote the iconic site to its full potential, considering its unique complexity and considerable programming challenges.

Studios in presence of the instructors will generally occur Tuesdays 9-6.
Instructors will be available to assist and discuss studio work via Skype and email on Fridays 2-6.
An optional site visit (in Montreal) is proposed on Friday, September 21st.
