Prairie Studio is a design studio taught jointly by Peter Sampson and Liz Wreford. They are the Principals of Public City Architecture based in Winnipeg.  An architect and landscape architect respectively, Peter and Liz are teaching their second current-events based urban/site/architecture studio at the Daniels.   This year the site of the studio is Winnipeg’s fabled Portage and Main intersection, known colloquially as the crossroads of the country.  The subject of a forthcoming municipal plebiscite that asks citizens whether a or not a major urban intersection should be open to pedestrian crossings, Portage and Main is rich with local history, controversy, fiction, and opportunity.  Prairie Studio begins by bringing students to Winnipeg in early September, and invites you to engage in this urban situation that has separated people from traffic for the past half century or so. The studio invites students to develop a significant design intervention that questions the city’s past, present, and/or future relationship to urbanism and asks ultimately, what is architecture’s attitude towards the politics of place.
