Katie Filek

Katie Filek is a PhD candidate in Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the Daniels Faculty. She holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design (Honours) from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano. She carried out part of her master’s degree at Graz University of Technology.

Filek's research focuses on the transnational circulation of architectural knowledge in the 20th century, with a particular focus on mid-century Canada. Her dissertation examines how foreign expertise was introduced and translated through local professional, economic, and material conditions in the rapid development of Canada’s built environment following WWII. Her research is supported by a Canada Graduate Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Filek is also co-editor of the Paris-based publishing project As Found Editions and is active as a translator, working between several languages. She has previously worked for architecture firms in Italy, Austria, and France and for the journal GAM (Graz Architecture Magazine).
