Selected Topics in Architecture: WOOD in ARCHITECTURE : A Hands-on Approach

Instructors: Christine Ho Ping Kong & Peter Tan
Meeting Section: LEC0101
Tuesdays, 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them. -Aristotle

This primarily workshop-based course will be a hands-on investigation of solid lumber and the diverse techniques employed in creating various structural elements - from small items to the larger built environment. The range of explorations can include architectural details, furniture and small timber construction.

The weekly class will consist of :

(1 hr) : a combination of lectures, show and tell with physical materials/models and small group discussions

(2 hrs) : demonstrations of woodworking techniques and hands-on practice in the woodworking workshop

We will look at examples of the many historical uses of wood, its current use, and its significance to modern architecture. There will be discussions on the ongoing debate on the use of large timber framing and the environmental impact of the forestry and lumber processing industry.

The show and tell will present solid, engineered and other wood-based products used in current construction. We will introduce many species of wood and discuss how to incorporate their inherent properties into a design.

Students will be given a selection of small built projects that experiment with the shaping of solid lumber. Both the usage of hand and power tools will be taught and practiced. Techniques of cutting, shaping, lamination, joining, steam bending and finishing will be demonstrated. We will learn different methods of traditional wood joinery as well as experiment with newer joinery techniques.

Hand sketches for design and details are encouraged - not computer drawings.

We will use case studies through model making to explore the use of wood in architectural form. Students will then apply their research towards their individual project. As students design by making, they will also begin the process of creating a set of shop/fabrication drawings and develop the skills, knowledge and techniques to build their own design.

Notes :

1. In workshop safety guidelines provided by the instructor and woodshop staff are to be followed at all times.

2. Additional funds are required for solid lumber and woodworking materials for projects.
