Overview

This Global architecture course will focus on the design of new typologies of public spaces in the Medina of Fez, Morocco, through the development of acupunctural urban strategies and small scale architectural propositions for public spaces, spanning different temporalities. Working hand in hand with Moroccan students from Euro-Mediterannean University in Fez, and visiting students from the Architecture School of Fourah Bay College (Freetown Sierra Leone), Daniels students will research in situ the Medina of Fez to understand its specificities, its challenges and its inhabitants’ needs. They will be offered a series of site visits and workshops on sustainable construction methods, local craft techniques and community collaborative design approaches. Also, students will be given the opportunity to interact and work along with local stakeholders and craftswomen/ craftsmen.

The course will be led in collaboration with the School of Architecture and Industrial Design at the University of EuroMed in Fez, Morocco and the Municipality of Fez. The course is the first of its kind to offer a summer studio set on the African continent with a full immersion of students in the site of their interventions, and with a direct collaboration with Moroccan and Sierra Leonian architecture students, and a wide array of local stakeholders including craftsmen and craftswoman.
