Summer Studies Abroad: Fogo Island

Instructor: Gareth Long
Meeting Section: L0101
Summer 2023
Travel Dates: May 8 - 18, 2023

Overview

This summer students will travel to Fogo Island – an island off an island in Newfoundland. Here, in partnership with Fogo Island Arts, students will be introduced to an institution created with the conviction that art and artists have the capacity to instigate social change and offer new perspectives on issues of contemporary concern. By facilitating collaborations and connections between a local and international network of practitioners and thinkers, Fogo Island Arts aims to provide relevant insights on questions of human relationships with place, nature, financial capital, and one another. Students will get to know the island and its unique specificities through a series of seminars, fieldwork, visits with artists-in-residence, visits with locals, an examination of Fogo Island Arts’ past programming, and dialogue. At the end of the period abroad, students will be asked what knowledge they are able to bring back from the island; how can one take the island off of the island?
