Very Put Together is a research studio that will explore materials and fabrication. We’ll study and catalog the history of specific materials and their techniques, as well as their properties, symbolism, ecology, and use. We’ll deep-dive into different cultural perspectives and methods. This will not be a survey of all materials, rather, each student's interests will drive the focus of their independent research and production.

Familiar tectonic materials such as timber, metal, concrete and composites, are all possibilities as are materials more commonly associated with art practice such as fiber, fabric, and clay. Student analysis will require free experimentation that will test limits and develop new ideas that culminate in the fabrication of more refined fragments and tests. Looking to collapse the distance between drawing and building, this will be hands-on, applied material research based in the studio and the shop. No fabrication or tool experience needed, but students must bring a curiosity and creative impulse to test, iterate, observe and listen for big ideas while discovering the rules that govern material things.
