When Structure is the Architecture

ARC480H1 F2 LEC0102 (Fall 2026)

Instructor: Shannon Hilchie

A look at design principles and guidelines when architectural elements and buildings are dominated by the structure. We will explore the load paths, free-body diagrams, and material choices that impact the architectural design while meeting the strength, stiffness, and stability requirements fundamental to structural design. The course will make use of case studies, design examples, and where possible, in-class models. We will build on learning experiences from ARC281 and while not the main focus, some math skills may be helpful.
