Architectural Design Studio 6: Research Studio – ARC3016

High Density High Rise Residential Development and Heritage Preservation

This studio focused on the design and construction of high rise condominium buildings on sites with designated heritage buildings in Toronto. The current techniques for dealing with the heritage structures on such sites are problematic. Sometimes the heritage structures are moved; sometimes only their facades are retained; and sometimes the buildings have been entirely dismantled, their facades reconstructed anew once the new condominium has been completed.

It this studio, alternative means of combining the existing heritage buildings with the new construction were explored. Complex structural solutions were devised to permit new ways of incorporating the heritage structures in the new construction.
