Architectural Representation 1 – ARC221

“Architects do no make buildings, they make drawings for buildings.” – Robin Evans

Unlike many art practices, the architect affects their work remotely, through their drawings. The techniques of architectural representation used for this impact the manner in which the object is seen, understood, and built, and offer the designer powerful tools for the shaping of material at a distance. This course introduces the rules, conventions, and properties for techniques of architectural representation through the production of orthographic, oblique, and perspective projections which together have formed the foundation of architectural representation for the past five hundred years. While the understanding of these traditional techniques remains as essential today as it did to Alberti, this course emphasizes this understanding in both traditional (paper) and digital media, and explores translations between the two.
