Evlyn Sun, "Transforming Highway Verges: Designing a Regenerative Landscape"
This project transforms Southern Ontario’s heavily polluted highway landscapes into regenerative ecosystems through innovative, practical design interventions. Targeting the congested 401-427 interchange near Toronto Pearson Airport, it leverages invasive vegetation to produce biochar, creates integrated renewable energy systems, and strategically deploys green infrastructure to reduce air, water, and soil contaminants.
This comprehensive approach addresses immediate environmental and health impacts, and lays a foundation for future landscapes that support biodiversity, ecological integrity, and public health, demonstrating a scalable model for resilient urban landscapes and infrastructure. The highway, once a site of environmental harm, becomes a platform for transformation and a catalyst for regenerative futures.
