Course Exemptions & Transfer Credits

Transfer Credits

Transfer credits are assessed upon admission by the Admissions Committee and are rarely granted as applicants have the option to apply for advanced standing in the Master of Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture programs. Students interested in requesting transfer credits should submit the School of Graduate Studies Transfer Credit request form. This can be submitted first to the Daniels Faculty for review. If eligible for consideration, the request will be passed to the School of Graduate Studies for final approval.

Note: Transfer credit may only be granted for graduate work completed in another program, provided that the course(s) has not been credited towards another degree, diploma, certificate, or any other qualification. Approval of both the graduate unit and the School of Graduate Studies is required.

Course Exemptions

The request submission deadline for the 2019/20 academic year is July 24, 2019.

With the approval of the graduate unit a student may be exempt from a specific course requirement permitting the substitution of another course to meet degree requirements. If granted, the overall course credit requirements for the degree are not reduced.

When a request is submitted, the Daniels Faculty will assess courses obtained at a post-secondary institution where a degree program has been completed for potential course exemptions. The most commonly approved type of exemptions granted are course exemptions.  Acceptance of course exemptions by the Daniels Faculty shall be based on the recognition that, while learning experiences may differ in a variety of ways, their substance may be virtually equivalent in terms of their content and rigour. Some courses, however, are considered paired with one another or with the studio curriculum.

In order for your course exemption requests to be reviewed for the 2019/20 academic year and before elective course enrolment begins, you must submit the required documentation as soon as possible, and no later than Wednesday, July 24, 2019. Requests received after this date will not be considered.

Note: Requests for fall and winter courses are considered once per year and must be submitted by the above listed deadline.

Course exemptions are granted only upon approval of the course Instructor and the Program Director and are not guaranteed. You must have achieved a grade of 'B' or higher in all of the courses listed for exemption to be considered. Each course exemption granted has a certain number of Full Course Equivalents (FCE) that must be replaced with electives totaling the same number of FCEs. Course exemptions have no credit weight. Signatures from course instructors or the Program Director are not to be obtained by students. The Office of the Registrar and Student Services will process the request.

The following documentation is required in order for your previous credits to be assessed for course exemption:

  • One Daniels Faculty course exemption request form per course request;
  • Course description as listed in the university calendar;
  • Course outline(s) distributed by the professor(s) in class;
  • Copies of assignments (essays, tests, etc.) completed in the course (if applicable);
  • Visual documentation of projects completed in the case of design and representation courses (if applicable);
  • A complete copy of the official academic transcript showing grades of courses taken.

Each course exemption request must be submitted as a single PDF document via e-mail to registrar@daniels.utoronto.ca using the subject line “Course Exemption Request - {course code}”. Multiple course exemption requests submitted together will not be considered.

Please note that exemptions are not guaranteed. Content of previously granted exemptions may no longer be sufficient as curriculum and course enhancements are made. We therefore may not consider exemption for all courses. Course exemptions for courses granted previously are reconsidered each year and are therefore subject to change from previous years.
