Programs of Study

As a Daniels Faculty undergraduate student, you are required to complete an appropriate combination of Programs of Study to graduate. See the Undergraduate Academic Calendar for details.

A Program of Study is a grouping of courses in a particular subject area, identified as either a Specialist program, a Major program, or a Minor program, based on the number of FCE required.

Generally,

Specialist = 9.0 to 14.0 FCE
Major = 6.0 to 8.0 FCE
Minor = 4.0 FCE

What is an ‘appropriate combination’ of Subject POSts?

The minimum requirements are:

  • 1 Specialist or
  • 2 Majors or
  • 1 Major and 2 Minors

The Daniels Faculty offers the following programs of study:

The specific program requirements at Daniels are listed below. Descriptions are available in the Undergraduate Academic Calendar

NOTE: Some Specialist programs require an additional supplementary application in addition to applying through ACORN. For further details please review the information in the chart below.

Enrolling in Programs on ACORN

Type 1 Faculty of Arts & Science Programs

Type 1 programs have no enrolment requirements other than successful completion of four full-course equivalents (4.0 FCEs). No application is required. To enrol in a Type 1 program, log on to ACORN at www.acorn.utoronto.ca and select "Programs" from the "Enrol & Manage" menu. In the "Add a Program" box, enter the code or name of the program you want to enrol in. A suggested list of programs will appear as you start typing. Double check that you're selecting the right program - remember that programs from all divisions (not only the Daniels Faculty and Arts & Science) will appear on this list based on the search criteria. Faculty of Arts & Science program codes begin with AS.

A pop-up box will appear after you select the program; click the "Enrol" button. If your enrolment is successful, ACORN will display the message: "You have successfully added the program [program code] [program name]". The program will appear under Currently Enrolled. Your enrolment in the Type 1 program is now complete.

Daniels Faculty Programs and Type 2 Faculty of Arts & Science Programs

Daniels Faculty programs and Type 2 programs in the Faculty of Arts & Science have two request periods. (See above for Daniels Faculty dates.  Click here for the Faculty of Arts & Science dates and deadlines.) There are 3 steps to enrolling in Daniels Faculty programs and Type 2 Faculty of Arts & Science programs:

Remember that once you have completed 4.0 full-course equivalents, you will not be able to enrol in further courses until you have enrolled in the minimum appropriate combination of programs. If you have not requested your Daniels programs and/or Type 2 Faculty of Arts & Science programs during the first round, you will need to enrol in interim backup program(s) if you want to enrol in courses for the Fall/Winter. If you need help, contact the Office of the Registrar and Student Services.

Late requests will not be accepted by the Daniels Faculty or the Faculty of Arts & Science; if you miss the deadline for the first request period, you will need to wait until the second period to submit your request.

Step 1: Submit a request on ACORN

Log on to ACORN and select "Programs" from the "Enrol & Manage" menu. Daniels Faculty program codes begin with AH and Faculty of Arts & Science program codes begin with AS.

A pop-up box will appear after you select the program; click the "Request to Enrol" button. If your request has been submitted, ACORN will display the message: "You have requested enrolment in the program [program code] [program name]". The program will appear under the "Requested" heading.

You can add requests for as many programs as you wish, but remember—if you are invited to all of them, you can enrol in no more than three, of which only two can be Majors and/or Specialists – and you must ensure that you are enrolled in the Daniels program required by your degree (see above). You should only request Faculty of Arts & Science programs for which you meet the admission requirements (as listed in the 2018-2019 Arts & Science Calendar).

Step 2: Check results of your requests

Beginning June 30 (first request period) or September 15 (second request period), return to ACORN and select "Programs" from the "Enrol & Manage" menu. If your request is successful and you have been admitted, the program will appear under the "Invited" heading.

If your request is not successful, the program will appear under the "Refused" heading. If a decision has not been made, the program will remain under "Requested". If you have questions regarding the refusal or lack of decision, contact the Office of the Registrar and Student Services for Daniels Faculty programs or the department/sponsor of the program for Faculty of Arts & Science programs.

Step 3: Accept invitation to program

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in the Daniels Faculty program or Type 2 Faculty of Arts & Science program, it will appear under the "Invited" heading.

To accept the invitation to enrol, click the "Accept" button. A pop-up box will appear; confirm your acceptance by clicking the "Accept" button once more. If the acceptance is successful, ACORN will display the message: "You have accepted the invitation and enrolled in program [program code] [program name]". The program will appear under the "Currently Enrolled" heading. Your enrolment in a Daniels Faculty program or a Type 2 Faculty of Arts & Science program is now complete.

To decline the invitation to enrol, click the gear icon next to the "Accept" button and select "Remove program". You must ensure that you are enrolled in the Daniels Faculty program required by your degree.

The deadline for accepting an invitation is August 8 (first request period) or September 25 (second request period).

Type 3 Faculty of Arts & Science Subject POSts

Type 3 programs require completion of specific course(s), have a finite number of spaces and additional information may be required by the program sponsor.

There are two request periods for Type 3 programs, but some only accept applications in the first request period.

Type 3 programs with a 3 - yes indicator in the listings will be accepting second round applications.

Type 3 programs with a 3 - no indicator in the listings will NOT be accepting formal second round applications; contact the department/sponsor directly for consideration for program enrolment during this time.

To enrol in Type 3 programs, follow these three steps:

  • Step 1: apply to the Type 3 program using the Type 3 application form (available April 1)
  • Step 2: check ACORN to see if the department has given you an "invitation" to enrol
  • Step 3: accept the invitation to enrol on ACORN

Remember that once you have completed 4.0 full-course equivalents, you will not be able to enrol in further courses until you have enrolled in the minimum appropriate combination of programs. You may need to enrol in interim backup program(s) if you want to enrol in courses for the Fall/Winter while you are waiting for the results of your program requests. If you need help, contact the Office of the Registrar and Student Services.

DO NOT make requests for Type 3 programs using ACORN—these will not be considered. Only requests made using the Type 3 application form will be considered.

Step 1: Apply to the Type 3 program using the Type 3 Application Form

Complete the Type 3 Program Application form (available April 1). You will receive an email confirmation of your submission.

Please Note: Type 3 program requests submitted using the Application form will NOT be shown on ACORN until mid-June (first request period) or early September (second request period), when departments consider your application.

If you have questions regarding the refusal or lack of decision, contact the department/sponsor of the program.

Step 3: Accept invitation to program

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in the Type 3 program, it will appear under the "Invited" heading.

To accept the invitation to enrol, click the "Accept" button. A pop-up box will appear; confirm your acceptance by clicking the "Accept" button once more. If the acceptance is successful, ACORN will display the message: "You have accepted the invitation and enrolled in program [program code] [program name]". The program will appear under Currently Enrolled. Your enrolment in the Type 3 program is now complete.

To decline the invitation to enrol, click the gear icon next to the "Accept" button and select "Remove program".

The deadline for accepting an invitation is August 3 (first request period) or September 25 (second request period).

Changing and Deleting Subject Programs

Changing Faculty of Arts & Science Subject Programs

There are some program groupings in the Faculty of Arts & Science that allow you to change among the members with no re-application or departmental approval required. For example, if you are enrolled in the specialist in Human Geography, you can switch to the specialist in Environmental Geography, or vice-versa. You can find a listing of Type 2 and 3 program groups that allow this type of changing here. Use the "CHANGE" feature on ACORN to switch amongst members of the same groups. The change option will be available from April 1 to September 19 for Type 2 Faculty of Arts & Science programs and from July 3 to September 19 for Type 3 Faculty of Arts & Science programs.

If your program and the one you would like to change to are not in one of the groups here, you must request the new one or contact the appropriate Faculty of Arts & Science department/sponsor for approval to change.

Deleting Subject Programs

If you would like to delete a Daniels Faculty program or a Type 1, 2 or 3 Faculty of Arts & Science program, you may do so on ACORN by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of each program listing. You can delete programs during the following time periods:

Type 1 Faculty of Arts & Science programs – from April 1 to September 19

Daniels Faculty programs and Type 2 Faculty of Arts & Science programs - from April 1 to September 19

Type 3 Faculty of Arts & Science programs – from July 3 to September 19

To make deletions outside these dates, contact the Office of the Registrar and Student Services. Remember you must enrol in the minimum appropriate combination of programs for your degree or you will be prevented from enrolling in courses on ACORN.
