19.02.18 - Reading list: Re-imagining Toronto's urban waterways via Places Journal & Alissa North
Looking for something to read over reading week? Interested in learning more about the history, value, influence, and future of Toronto's extensive network of ravines? Check out Associate Professor Alissa North's reading list on Places Journal. Derived from sources that were provided to students in the award-winning Master of Landscape Architecture studio course Toronto Ravine Re-Create (LAN 3016), the list includes articles and books by Pierre Bélanger (BLA 1996), Bradley Cantrell & Daniels Faculty Assistant Professor Justine Holzman, Michael Hough, John Sewell, Jane Amidon, Charles Waldheim, and more.
Writes North in her introduction to the list:
There is potential for the ravines to serve on multiple levels to address problems of flooding at various scales, while also serving effectively to connect communities and support their recreational activities, enhance urban mobility, promote viable energy systems, and support vibrant urban ecology. Much of this is already happening, but with an increase in use of all of the above, the ecological health of the ravines is at stake. If the ravines fall into a state of disrepair, their ability to perform substantially as green infrastructure for the city will be compromised.
