Instructor: Christy Anderson
Meeting Section: L9101
Synchronous; July 5th - July 31st
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 10:00am - 12:00pm

In building, we transform the matter of nature into the materials of architecture. That process draws on both the energy of labour and the alchemical processes of craft and experience. This seminar will look at that transformation in the history of architecture through a reading of architectural theory well as natural history and cultural criticism. Equally important will be a close attention to buildings themselves from a variety of periods and traditions. Projects will focus on one of these alchemical transformations from matter to materials. Students can pursue their interests in a final project on any period or place. Readings will include Alberti, Biringuccio, Lucretius, Bachelard, Papapetros, Bennett.
