Programs of Study

What is a Program of Study?

Daniels Faculty undergraduate students are required to complete an appropriate program combination to satisfy their degree requirements. A program of study - or subject POSt - is a grouping of courses in a particular subject area, identified as either a Specialist program, a Major program, a Minor program, or a Certificate program.

Generally:

  • Specialist = 9.0 - 14.0 credits
  • Major = 6.0 - 8.0 credits
  • Minor = 4.0 credits
  • Certificate = 2.0 credits

An appropriate minimum combination of programs is required to enrol in courses and complete your Honours Bachelor of Arts degree. A maximum of three subject POSts can be active on your ACORN account, and if you are enrolled at this limit, one of your subject POSts must be a minor or certificate program of study.

Program Request Dates

There are two types of programs at the Daniels Faculty and the Faculty of Arts & Science: open and limited.

Each program type has a different application process, and abides by different dates and deadlines. For information on Faculty of Arts & Science program request dates, please refer to the Faculty of Arts & Science Program Toolkit.

OPEN ENROLMENT DEADLINES

For Daniels Faculty open enrolment programs, there is a single request period:

  • Enrol on ACORN between March 1st, 2024 - September 16th, 2024

LIMITED ENROLMENT DEADLINES

For Daniels Faculty limited enrolment programs, there are 4 steps to enrolling in these programs:

  1. Submit a request on ACORN by April 26th, 2024

  2. Submit a supplementary application before May 9th, 2024 (11:59 PM)

  3. Check the results of your request on ACORN on June 7th, 2024

  4. Accept the invitation by July 5th, 2024, or before course enrolment

Late requests will not be accepted. If you miss the deadlines specified above, there is no second period to request a Daniels Faculty program of study for that academic session.

Daniels Programs

Each program of study has a distinct code for enrolment; all Daniels Faculty codes begin with AH. Daniels Faculty Programs (AH codes) are open only to Daniels Faculty students. Information about specific program requirements and descriptions of Daniels Faculty programs of study can be found in the Undergraduate Academic Calendar.

The Daniels Faculty currently offers the following programs of study:

Limited Programs

In order to enrol in limited programs, you have to complete some additional requirements like obtaining minimum grades or completing required courses. The additional requirements for the following limited programs are available in the Daniels Faculty Academic Calendar.

Watch the Info Session on how to apply for Specialist streams within the Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies program.

Open Programs

These open programs don’t have any specific courses required for enrolment. As long as have completed - or are currently completing - 4.0 credits, and the program is open to your degree type, you can apply to an open program.

1Open only to Honours Bachelor of Arts, Architectural Studies students.
2Open only to Honours Bachelor of Arts, Visual Studies students.

Architectural Studies Programs

All students beginning their studies in the Honours Bachelor of Arts, Architectural Studies program are automatically enrolled in the (AHSPE1000) Specialist in Architectural Studies: Comprehensive Stream.

After their second year of study, with the completion of the required 8.0 credits, students who wish to pursue one of the directed Specialist streams (AHSPE1001, AHSPE1002, AHSPE1003) and meet the specified admission requirements are able to request admission during the limited program enrolment period indicated above. Meeting the admission requirements for these streams does not guarantee entry.

Visual Studies Programs

All students beginning their studies in the Honours Bachelor of Arts, Visual Studies program are automatically enrolled in the (AHMAJ2000) Major in Visual Studies.

After their first year of study, with the completion of 4.0 credits, students who wish to pursue one of the directed Specialist streams (AHSPE2001, AHSPE2002) are able to request admission during the open program enrolment period indicated above.

Students who choose to continue with the (AHMAJ2000) Major in Visual Studies after their first year of study rather than requesting one of the Specialist streams must enrol in at least one of the following to satisfy the appropriate program combination required for your degree:

  • 1 Major program
  • 2 Minor programs

Information about specific program requirements and descriptions of Daniels Faculty programs of study can be found in the Undergraduate Academic Calendar

The program code ASMIN0660 is a Visual Studies Minor program offered by the Faculty of Arts & Science and is available by application only to students outside of Daniels. If you are a Faculty of Arts & Science student who is interested in pursuing the Visual Studies Minor, please see the Faculty of Arts & Sciences Academic Calendar for details. Specialists and Majors in Architectural or Visual Studies are not available to students outside of Daniels.

Arts & Science Programs

As soon as you complete 4.0 credits, you are eligible to enrol/request a program of study offered through the Faculty of Arts & Science. You are able to combine your required Daniels Subject Program with many programs of study offered through the Faculty of Arts & Science. There are some exceptions. Daniels students are only eligible to enrol in various Specialists, Majors and Minors with some exceptions such as Rotman Commerce programs, the Specialist and Major programs in Computer Science, and others.  Daniels students are not permitted to enrol in Faculty of Arts & Science certificate programs.  If you are interested in a certificate program, review the Daniels programs in the academic calendar.

All Faculty of Arts & Science Program of Study codes begin with AS. Information about Faculty of Arts & Science programs of study, deadline dates, and enrolment information can be found on the Faculty of Arts and Science Program Toolkit.

Deleting Programs

If you would like to delete a Daniels Faculty program, you may do so on ACORN by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of each program listing. You may only delete programs during the specified open program enrolment period.

To delete programs of study outside of these dates, contact the Office of the Registrar and Student Services. Remember you must enrol in the minimum appropriate combination of programs for your degree or you will be prevented from enrolling in courses on ACORN.

Changing Programs

Daniels students who wish to change between the Honours Bachelor of Arts, Architectural Studies and the Honours Bachelor of Arts, Visual Studies degree programs are required to apply for an Internal Undergraduate Degree Transfer. The deadline for submitting this form to have your request considered for the next Fall/Winter academic session is April 30th.

Students who enrolled in AHMAJ2020 or AHMAJ2390 (available only until 2016)  who wish to change into the AHSPE1000 Comprehensive Studies stream are also required to apply for an Internal Undergraduate Curriculum Transfer. The deadline for submitting this form to have your request considered for the next Fall/Winter academic session April 30th. Late requests to change into the AHSPE1000 by students who began in 2016 or earlier may be considered.

How to Request a Program

Open Programs

Step 1: Enrol in the program on ACORN

Log on to ACORN and select "Programs" from the "Enrol & Manage" menu. In the "Add a Program" box, enter the code or name of the program you want to enrol in. A suggested list of programs will appear as you start typing. Double check that you're selecting the right program - remember that programs from all divisions (not only the Daniels Faculty and Arts & Science) will appear on this list based on the search criteria. Daniels Faculty program codes begin with AH and Faculty of Arts & Science program codes begin with AS.

A pop-up box will appear after you select the program; click the "Request to Enrol" button. Open program requests do not require departmental review so provided you are eligible to enrol in the program, it will be added to your active programs immediately.

Limited Programs

Step 1: Submit a request on ACORN

Log on to ACORN and select "Programs" from the "Enrol & Manage" menu. In the "Add a Program" box, enter the code or name of the program you want to enrol in. A suggested list of programs will appear as you start typing. Double check that you're selecting the right program - remember that programs from all divisions (not only the Daniels Faculty and Arts & Science) will appear on this list based on the search criteria. Daniels Faculty program codes begin with AH and Faculty of Arts & Science program codes begin with AS.

A pop-up box will appear after you select the program; click the "Request to Enrol" button.

You can add requests for as many programs as you wish, but remember—if you are invited to all of them, you can enrol in no more than three, of which only two can be Majors and/or Specialists – and you must ensure that you are enrolled in the Daniels program required by your degree. You should only request Faculty of Arts & Science programs for which you meet the admission requirements (as listed in the Faculty of Arts & Science Calendar).

Step 2: Check results of your requests

Beginning June 7th, 2024, return to ACORN and select "Programs" from the "Enrol & Manage" menu. If your request is successful and you have been admitted, the Daniels Faculty program of study will appear under the "Invited" heading.

If your request is not successful, the program will appear under the "Refused" heading. If a decision has not been made, the program will remain under "Requested". If you have questions regarding the refusal or lack of decision concerning a Daniels Faculty program of study, contact the Office of the Registrar and Student Services. For programs of study outside of the Daniels Faculty, please contact the department/sponsor of the program for Faculty of Arts & Science programs.

Step 3: Accept invitation to program

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in the Daniels Faculty program, it will appear under the "Invited" heading. You must accept your invitation no later than July 5th, 2024, or your invitation will be recinded.

To accept the invitation to enrol, click the "Accept" button. A pop-up box will appear; confirm your acceptance by clicking the "Accept" button once more. If the acceptance is successful, ACORN will display the message: "You have accepted the invitation and enrolled in program [program code] [program name]". The program will appear under the "Currently Enrolled" heading. Your enrolment in a Daniels Faculty program is now complete.

To decline the invitation to enrol, click the gear icon next to the "Accept" button and select "Remove program". You must ensure that you are enrolled in the Daniels Faculty programs of study required by your degree.

If you do not accept your program of study, you may not be able to enrol in program-specific courses during the priority enrolment period.
