Overview

As part of a multi-year initiative, Daniels will continue this summer in a global collaboration with students from the Department of Architecture of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) based in Kumasi, Ghana. We will be continuing research on several urban and rural community sites throughout Ghana and Canada. Working in small, focused groups, we will exchange local knowledge and collaborate on innovative and sustainable strategies to transform communities and cities. Students from Daniels will spend two weeks with students from KNUST in Ghana and students from KNUST will then spend two weeks in Canada visiting the sites of research initiated last summer. Through these investigations we hope to incite reactions to the following questions:

  • How do networks of technology, resources, energy, transportation, culture, etc., operate in each of these contexts?
  • How might architecture become part of a process of change at the scale of a community but also the scale of a system?
  • What is the agency of the designer? Who are we designing for?

Students from the previous summer have the priority of participating in the exchange portion of the course this summer. Other students are welcome with the expectation that they will build upon research initiated last summer in a collaborative studio environment.
