Summer 2022

Overview

As part of a multi-year initiative, Daniels will begin this summer in a global virtual collaboration with students from the Department of Architecture of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) based in Kumasi, Ghana. We will be conducting research on several urban and rural community sites throughout Ghana and Canada. In the summers to follow, students from Daniels will travel to Ghana to work directly on these sites and students from KNUST will travel to Canada to do the same. Working in small, focused groups, we will exchange local knowledge and collaborate on innovative and sustainable strategies to transform communities and cities. We will begin by examining the hard and soft systems in which these sites are embedded to collectively explore the potential for a programmatic intervention that operates at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Through these investigations we hope to incite reactions to the following questions:

  • How do networks of technology, resources, energy, transportation, culture, etc., operate in each of these contexts?
  • How might architecture become part of a process of change at the scale of a community but also the scale of a system?
  • What is the agency of the designer? Who are we designing for?

This course will be held online synchronously during the July – August Summer 2022 session, though students will have the option of attending in-person. Additionally, students will have the option of participating in the exchange portion of the course next summer in Ghana.
