Beginning of Term: Update on Services - Undergraduate

Dear Students, 

Welcome to the academic year. We hope that you are doing well and excited to begin a new term.   Please take the time to review this email thoroughly as it includes important information related to health and safety measures and building access.  

Daniels faculty and staff have been working hard this summer to make sure that you have access to resources and in person learning activities for the best possible experience this fall.  

Classes begin this week– Thursday, September 9   

Double check your course enrolment on ACORN and take a look at your Timetable for classroom times and locations.  

Course material can be found on your student portal, Quercus. Students will find their syllabus and course information in Quercus. There will be no Tutorials until you have had at least one regular class.  Check with your instructor in your first class if you are unsure as to when you will begin tutorials.  

UCHECK 

All members of our community who come onto U of T campuses or premises must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and are required to upload proof of vaccination via UCheck

Proof of vaccination can be a photograph of a paper vaccination receipt or an electronic receipt that you received by email. Those vaccinated in Ontario can generate and download their vaccine receipts here. See the UCheck FAQs for more information about acceptable documents. 

MASKS  

As part of its commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment, the University has implemented a Policy on Non-Medical Masks and Face Coverings requiring non-medical masks or face coverings to be worn indoors in all common-use spaces on University property.  

ONE SPADINA BUILDING HOURS  

One Spadina will be open Monday to Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm 

The Office of the Registrar and Students Services (ORSS), IT HelpDesk, Digital Fabrication labs and Workshop facilities in the Daniels Building at One Spadina will be available to students.  Please review their specific office hours online.

Students enrolled in Visual studies courses will have additional access to the Borden Buildings and Forestry students will have additional access to the Earth Sciences Building.  

DROP IN ADVISING  

The Office of the Registrar and Student Services offers drop in appointments on Wednesday's 3-4pm. These are one-on-one appointments done via Zoom breakout rooms. In addition, students can request an advising appointment (15min or 30min. time slots) by sending an email to registrar@daniels.utoronto.ca  

FOBS (UG) 

Access to the One Spadina building after regular building hours is given to students by a FOB key.  

If you are a new student and need access to a building, you can pick up your fob at One Spadina, room 100 – ORSS via appointment. To handle the distribution of new student FOB’s, we will be restricting the purchase of FOB keys to select hours in DA100.   FOB keys require a $100 deposit at the time of purchase, refundable upon completion of your degree.  

  • Step 1: Log into your Daniels Account , ORSS Services, in the Financial Services Section, click on FOB Access Key Deposit to pay online.   
  • Step 2: Make an appointment on the online booking system HERE to pick up your FOB, starting Monday, September 20th 
  • Step 3: Come to DA100 to pick up your FOB.  Please have your TCard (or other photo ID) ready to pick up your FOB.  
  • Step 4: Go to IT to activate your fob for your print account 

Returning students whose fobs are not working should first try a hotspot. A hotspot can be found outside of room 100.    

DANIELS ACCOUNT 

The Daniels account will allow you to load funds onto your print account, access webforms and pay your FOB deposit and order a locker. An account is created for you automatically upon UTORID verification. By default your login is your UTORID and your password is your student number. To log in click here.  

LOCKERS  

Lockers are now available to rent for the Fall/Winter 2021-22 academic year. Lockers are rented on a first-come, first-serve basis to students for $25.  Lockers can only be purchased online through your Daniels Account .  

Once you have made your payment an email will be sent to your official university email account with your new locker number and the lock combination.  The rental period runs from the date of purchase to April 30th 2022. 

EBERHARD ZEIDLER LIBRARY  

The library will be open this semester, beginning September 7. For the first 2 weeks, Sept Sep. 7-17 the library will be open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.   

DIGITAL FABRICATION LABS  

The Digital Fabrication labs are open Monday to Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. If you have a question about the labs, please contact fabrication@daniels.utoronto.ca 

3D Print Lab: The Daniels Digital Fabrication Lab houses 2 different 3D printing systems. 3D Systems Binderjet printing and Stratasys Fused deposition Modeling. There are 3 3D Systems binderjet printers and 3 Stratasys FDM printers.  

Laser Cutter Lab: Due to COVID-19 distancing limits the laser cutter lab will operate with 3 laser cutters with reduced capacity for laser cutter training.  All Daniels Masters students and Undergraduate from ARC280 onwards can sign up for training for the operation of the laser cutter lab. The Daniels Digital Fabrication Laser Cutter Lab is an on-demand system with a new queuing system being implement for the fall term to allow for remote monitoring of a student’s position for laser cutter access. This system will alleviate any congregation in Daniels Commons as student can monitor their position in the Laser Que through the Daniels website. More information to follow at system launch. The Daniels Laser Cutter Training site will launch in the 2nd week of the academic term allowing students to sign up for individual training sessions for the laser lab. Training will be distanced with 1 student per digital fabrication work-study. Info for training sign up emailed once training sessions commence.  

CNC Lab and Waterjet Lab: The CNC lab will also only allow reduced capacity due to COVID-19 physical distancing regulations. For larger group site models and CNC milling assignments please email at minimum 2 weeks in advance to allow for proper file setup, review and coordination for scheduling and milling.  

Waterjet: The Waterjet Lab in the Metal shop is available for use, files are to be submitted in advance for review and scheduling for cutting. Students and faculty should request material for stock availability. In most cases metal must be ordered and can take 2-3 days for delivery. Physical distancing limits will also be in place within the waterjet lab.  

WORKSHOP  

Model Workshop  

The model workshop is located in DA060-DA070 at the basement level, accessible via the north elevator.   The model workshop consists of a supervised wood working Machine Room, a versatile Assembly Room, including space for casting, and a large Spray Booth for both painting and adhesives.    

Some personal protective equipment (PPE) is available for use in these spaces, but students are encouraged to purchase and bring their own for working in the model workshop. Safety glasses and dust masks are available to purchase through the Model Workshop.

Using the Model Workshop  

Book Shop Time  

The Assembly Room and Spray Booth are accessible on a first-come first-served basis. Students are responsible for adhering to University of Toronto’s Covid Guidelines and self-regulating usage and cleaning of this space, including storage areas.  

Please book access to the Machine Room 24 hours in advance via the shop Bookings page. We are not offering our standard shop training sessions during the fall semester. However, advice and instruction on specific machine use will be provided one-on-one as needed.

IT  

IT HelpDesk will be open Monday to Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. No appointment is necessary; support will be provided on first-come first-served basis, given priority to faculty members and staff requests. Online, remote support will remain available (and is the preferred method of IT support at this time).   

Plotting and printing is available 24/7 with fob access. It will be unsupervised. If you need to borrow equipment, you must submit a service ticket request. IT staff will respond with instructions on how to pick-up your equipment. When accessing IT HelpDesk or the plotting areas, remember to maintain physical distance, wear your mask, and follow the signage and markings on the floor.
